Post-recession shifts could benefit NM startup companies
June 04, 2010New Mexico Business Weekly - by Kevin Robinson-Avila Click here to read the entire article.
The recession knocked the wind out of the venture capital industry.
Even with the economy slowly recovering, venture investments and fundraising are still at their lowest levels
nationwide since the mid-1990s.
But like most burst bubbles, the crash has some silver linings — and they bode well for New Mexico, said Michael
Schafer, managing director of New Mexico Community Capital, a small local fund.
With less money to go around, investors are focusing more on small, early-stage funds that support promising
startups. That contrasts with the pre-recession emphasis on megafunds that often made huge investments in search
of mega-returns in mature companies.

partnerships.
New Mexico Community Capital committed $250,000 to the Albuquerque startup to help it fully develop and

substantially lower operating costs at workers’ compensation clinics, while simultaneously improving care for
patients.
ProtoHIT also negotiated an agreement with an international auto supplier to start beta testing the software at inhouse
clinics.

A group of individual investors with minority stakes in IntelliCyt Corp. posed so many problems last year for the
board of directors that majority shareholders opted to buy them out.
New Mexico Community Capital and the Verge Fund put up $650,000 last fall to remove about a half-dozen
individual shareholders, who together had placed about $660,000 in the company, said NMCC Managing Director
Michael Schafer.
Venture capitalist Michael Schafer shapes business futures
February 19, 2010New Mexico Business Weekly - by Kevin Robinson-Avila Click here to read the entire article.
Michael Schafer knew he wanted to be a venture capitalist after reading “A day in the life of Frederick Adler” in 1981.
Schafer was barely a year out of college when he saw the Washington Post story on Adler, a long-time mover and
shaker in the venture capital industry.
“It was a seminal event for me,” Schafer said. “Adler did so many different things and was involved in so many
projects and companies. I read that article and I said, ‘That’s what I want to do.’”
Three decades later, Schafer is recognized as a prime mover and shaker who helped build many private equity funds
with multimillion-dollar investments in scores of companies nationwide.
Now, as managing director of New Mexico Community Capital, Schafer is doing the same for local companies, helping them land
funding and build their businesses.
Those who know Schafer say he’s a major asset to NMCC.
