Christopher Madrid Recognized for Work to Help Small Business and Grow Economy
Bernalillo, New Mexico - Christopher Madrid, Vice President of IMPACT-New Mexico, a program of New Mexico Community Capital has received the USDA's Best Practices Award for Economic Development. The award, recognizes individuals or organizations that exhibit best practices and contributes greatly to the economic development of their communities and New Mexico, was received at Thursday's New Mexico Infrastructure Finance Conference (IFC) at Isleta.
"I am honored to receive the USDA's small business award," said Madrid. "Over 80 percent of the new jobs in our state are created by small business owners. It is my honor to serve them. " In his work with IMPACT-NM, Madrid provides "in the trenches," hands-on" client mentoring and critical customized assistance for performance improvement so that small businesses are ready and able to use financing (bank, micro, SBA, etc.) effectively for growth, job creation and performance. He also helps to manage LINK for Northern New Mexico Connect. LINK uses a community's own networks and resources to harness social capital for entrepreneurs. It serves small businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs working in Rio Arriba County. It is affiliated with the Taos Entrepreneurial Network (TEN) and GEN in San Miguel County, as well as other network facilitation efforts which are taking root in New Mexico.
Previously, Madrid served as facilitator of the Taos Entrepreneurial Network (TEN). Raised in Northern New Mexico, Christopher went on to receive his Undergraduate and Law Degrees from UNM after serving a tour of duty in the Marine Corps. He practiced law in Santa Fe and later served as a prosecutor for several years until he was accepted to and finished the University of Texas MBA program.

NEW MEXICO COMMUNITY CAPITAL NAMES J. MICHAEL SCHAFER AS MANAGING DIRECTOR
Bernalillo, NM, August 19, 2009 - New Mexico Community Capital is pleased to announce the addition of Michael Schafer as our new Managing Director. He began his new duties on Monday August 17th.
Michael is an experienced equity investor, fundraiser and manager with exceptional skills and energy. He previously served as General Partner and Principal with the venture capital firm of Tullis-Dickerson & Company (Greenwich, Connecticut). While at Tullis-Dickerson, Michael established and directed the firm’s New Mexico operations, including sourcing, negotiating and managing investments in New Mexico and California. His long-standing contacts in the New Mexico and southwestern US business communities augment his extensive private equity business relationships.
Michael left Tullis-Dickerson in 2002 to become the Founder, President and Managing General Partner of Ventures UNC, the venture capital arm of the $1.4 billion asset management group of the University of North Carolina’s endowment. His previous experience includes directing business development activities at SunPharm and founding/managing The Woodlands Venture Partners.
In his position as Managing Director of NMCC’s Fund I, Michael leads the Fund’s investment activities, directs portfolio company support, interfaces with the Fund’s limited partners, supervises the staff activities and directs the day-to-day operations of the Fund. He also assists in NMCC’s overall strategic growth.

2009 Analysis of State’s Entrepreneurial Ecosystem
